Stephen Nolting Student Answer/Post: It is very important for leaders to be relatable.  Being able to relate to others allows a leader to engage with people, build great relationships and generate loyalty (Quackenbush, 2016).  As workplace culture moves further into the 21st century, it is even more important for leaders to be able to connect with, influence and inspire their employees and all those qualities require the leader to actively use empathy, humility and active curiosity to deepen their relationships (Quackenbush, 2016).
Another leadership skill that is important today is having the ability to lead and manage remote and virtual teams (Murphy, 2017).  Many employees in the current workplace prefer to work from home, which means that managers have to overcome the challenges associated with telecommuting.  Also, many organizations now employ global teams who work remotely and that will require managers to overcome various cultural and language barriers.
The third important leadership skill for leading today is having the ability to influence.  Leaders must learn how to move away from the old method of controlling and realize that the only true way to improve results is by influencing better behaviors (Graves, 2013).  This is important because more employees are now knowledge workers or work in independent and self-managed roles that may not interact with managers on a regular basis or may have technical skills at a level much higher than the manager, which makes it difficult to manage them in a traditional way.  To get better performance out of these types of employees, managers must find ways to be more inspiring and influencing instead of demanding and controlling.

Angela Stackhouse   Student Answer/Post: There are a few best practices utilized by leaders of co-located teams that differ from best practices that leaders of virtual teams use.  As outlined in “Leading and Managing Virtual Teams,” leaders of face-to-face teams should strive to build trust within their team; effectively communicate their goals and drive work performance. 
However, leaders of virtual teams have several distinct best practices for the challenges of managing a global workforce.  These best practices include having step-by-step documentation of the processes to include where the process stands at the point of entry for the team member and periodically thereafter; identifying decision-making roles as well as defining those individuals that need to be kept abreast of the status of the projects.
I have learned skills (having started off as a hybrid student going to face-to-face courses on campus to switching to all online virtual classes) that will help me to lead a virtual team better than I would have without this experience.  In her article, “The Four Keys To Success With Virtual Teams,” Erin Meyer emphasizes the most important factor in leading a virtual team is communication and I think the same is true with online classes (Meyer, 2010).  It is much easier to be successful when the communication is open and frequent. 
Also, the fact that the students enrolled in my courses are from around the world with comments coming in at all hours of the day and night confirms the idea of maximizing those core hours when the highest number of people will be online at the same time.  All of this information and my current experiences as a virtual student should assist me when the opportunity to lead a virtual team becomes available.
